What Is a Preposition? 

A preposition is a group of words or group of words used before a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase to shoe direction, time, place, location, spatial relationships, or to introduce an object. Prepositions often tell us where one noun is in relation to another.

Example: The coffee is on the table beside you.                                                           

But they can also indicate more abstract ideas, such as purpose or contrast.                                                                                                          

Example: We went for a walk despite the rain.        

Types of Prepositions: 

Prepositions of Direction– To refer to a direction. 

Example: to, in, into, on, onto

Look to the left and you’ll see our destination.

Preposition of Time– To refer to one point in time or a period.

Example: in, at, on, since, for, by, during, from…to, from…until, with, within.

We’ve been working since this morning

Preposition of Space– To refer to a place use preposition in, at, on and inside.

Example: I left my phone on the bed.

To refer to an object higher than a point use over and above, and to refer to a point below use below, beneath, under, underneath.

Example: The dog hid under the table.                                                                         

To refer to an Object close to a point use by, near, next to, between, among and opposite.

Example: Park your car near the store. 

Preposition of Location– To refer to a location use the preposition, in (denoting area or volume), at (for a point) and on (a surface) 

Example: We saw a movie at the theatre. 

They live in Spain.  

The Keys are on the table.

Ending a sentence with preposition is not incorrect.

Example: Where did you come from? 

There is something we must meditate on.
